WTFAQ? How to write powerful Frequently Asked Questions
A set of well-crafted FAQs is such simple piece of copy, and yet such a powerful tool for connecting with your audience and persuading them to choose you.
They show off your brand voice/personality, deliver a HEAP of info in a scannable way, and help your right-fit clients/customers to make a decision (and stop procrastinating!)
But are FAQs right for you?
I'm gonna make a sweeping generalisation here and say ‘yeh, most likely.’
Whether you're a product or service based biz, there's bound to be some sort of pattern in the questions you're asked by customers/clients.
→ Usually around things like:
how your product/service works
what makes it different/special
what's included/not included
the investment
your processes
shipping/returns/communicating with you
Keen to write some FAQs for your website/emails?
Excellent.
This is how you'll get 'em right:
#️⃣ 1: Make them scannable
'Cause of the way they’re laid out visually, FAQs allow you to communicate a
heap of key info in a reader-friendly way - as long as you stick to one question at a time and keep your answers as concise as possible. Make it easy for your reader to find the info they need.
#️⃣ 2: Get strategic with SEO
FAQs are the perfect place to sneak in a few harder-to-place SEO keywords. You can take a bit of creative liberty with your questions/answers & strategically craft them in a way that purposefully contains a few of your targets.
(YAY ‘cause Google will thank you for your efforts & YAY ’cause there's no way in hell some keywords fit naturally onto a home/about page 🙃)
#️⃣ 3: Address objections to reduce risk
Use FAQs to address your reader’s worries/fears/objections and show them a positive way forward.
Are they freaking out about the investment? Why, yes they CAN use Afterpay!
Are they worried about a step in your process being too time intensive/a massive pain in the ass? Why, NO it doesn’t take long - all they have to do is [XYZ]
Are they worried they'll get bitten? There's no need to be, our monkeys are highly trained..
#️⃣ 4: Make them FUN!
Brands with personality are more fun to engage with - FACT! - so use your FAQs as an opportunity to play with language and embrace your brand voice. Try inserting little anecdotes/funny thoughts (parentheses are great for doing this… see, like now… you’re now inside my brain!) and imagine you're speaking directly to 1 person - this should help you keep the copy conversational.
#️⃣ 5: Eliminate confusion
Kinda obvious, but make sure your FAQs are doing their job - AKA answering the questions clearly! Before you get too carried away injecting personality, try bullet pointing the core messages for each answer. Once you have these figured out, you can then throw back a shot of tequila and release your creative alter-ego from its cage 🔥
